Making It Shine single available on Bandcamp and streaming

Ian Alexy is releasing the first song from his forthcoming record. It is available on his new Bandcamp page and streaming world wide.

“Things have changed and the past is gone,” is the opening line to Ian Alexy’s new single Making It Shine. Although the song was completed almost a year ago, it sounds written for the present moment. Electric guitars echo and sway over drummer Mike Cini’s steady and sinister beat. Ian whispers and growls, insisting on transcending adversity, as the title suggests. The line up is rounded out by Ben Peterson on bass and Ian’s long time friend, New Jersey guitarist Mike C. Smith. Making It Shine is the first single from Ian Alexy forthcoming new record.

Ian Alexy- Making It Shine documentary

Making It Shine is a four part documentary series written and edited by Ian Alexy. When quarantine began Ian was given the opportunity to go through the many hours of video compiled over the last twelve years of traveling and making music. Much of the footage had never been seen and revealed itself to be a treasure trove of music and images. The film juxtaposes the frenzied pace of the music life with the sudden isolation of quarantine. The series will cover Ian’s solo career and his work with Hobo Nephews Of Uncle Frank. Part 1 of the series will be released later this month along with the new single also titled Making It Shine.

Teague Alexy was deeply immersed in reggae this past July as he played a solo opening set with Matisyahu and Tribal Seeds in Superior, Wisconsin, and two days later sang with ska band Woodblind alongside Kymani Marley, Kabaka Pyramid and more at The 14th Annual Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival in Duluth, Minnesota.

On Saturday, July 20, Teague made his debut at The Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival in Duluth, Minnesota when he sat in with ska/rocksteady band Woodblind on their version of Teague’s “Workingman Song.” For video of the performance check out Teague’s IG page.

“Reggae inspired me to start playing guitar,” Teague said. “Reggae showed me the power that spirituality can have in music. I’ve learned so much from reggae and I’m always grateful when promoters see, ya know, intrinsic common threads and include me in reggae shows. Opening for guys like Ziggy, Matisyahu and seeing their bands up close, behind the scenes. Whew! What an education, man. I’ve been fortunate to be accepted by different music communities, cause, ya know, I take it all in. But, reggae is international. And, the reggae community including me proves it’s lack of discrimination etcetera because I’m not Jamaican, I chopped my dreads years ago and my music is not reggae. But, I carry plenty of reggae with me. So, yeah, it’s always an honor.”

Teague was so inspired by his reggae weekend he put together a Spotify playlist titled Teague’s Reggae Mixtape. Almost two hundred reggae songs and counting including Teague’s own “Don’t Go” from Circuit Sessions and the “Workingman Song” collaboration with Woodblind.

American Shuffle (Deluxe Digital Edition) Vail Sessions

AmericanShuffle_upr.jpg

APPLE MUSIC  /  SPOTIFY  /  BANDCAMP

In January 2014, Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank were touring through Colorado behind their new critically acclaimed album Number One Contender. After a show in Aspen, instead of staying in town, the hard travelin’ Hobo Nephews got back on the road.

“We PLAY in Aspen but we don’t STAY in Aspen,” laughed Teague Alexy. “Aspen hotels are slightly above our tour budget so we always drive out of town after the show.”

On this particular night, Ian and Teague Alexy, touring as a duo, drove through the Rocky Mountains to Ian’s old friend Adam Frehm’s place in nearby Vail. Adam is a well-known dobro player in Vermont and a founding member of the alt-bluegrass band Smokin’ Grass. Adam also played dobro on the Chieftan’s legendary Nashville album Further Down The Old Plank Road. Ian and Adam had played and recorded together when Ian lived in Vermont but hadn’t seen each other in over a decade.

“Ian and I slept on the couch and woke up to Adam making coffee and rolling big Colorado cigarettes,” said Teague. “We wiped the sleep from our eyes and before long we grabbed the guitars.”

Ian and Teague were touring behind Number One Contender, but they had their mind on their next album, American Shuffle. They already knew the next Hobo Nephew album was going to be recorded at Trampled By Turtles fiddle player Ryan Young’s new studio.

“Yeah, we were really into jamming these half-finished songs with everyone we could to hear how people would play along,” said Ian. “We’d keep those musical ideas floating around the back of our head until it was time to go to the studio.”

“Are you ready to make rock history?” Adam asked with a smile as he pulled out a little recorder meant for taping live shows. Amidst more laughs, coffee and drags of those Colorado cigarettes, and without a plan, they gathered around the little recorder on the coffee table and the Hobo Nephews Vail Sessions began to come to life.

By the time Adam’s friend Lizzy brought over a bag of breakfast donuts, Ian, Teague and Adam were in the midst of an early version of Teague’s new song “Low Flying Bird.” You can hear Lizzy come and go between verses on the recording but the music doesn’t stop. Teague belts out another chorus while Ian and Adam start trading guitar and dobro lines into an extended instrumental jam.

By early afternoon, Ian and Teague had packed up the van to head to the next show in Salt Lake City. Five years later, The Vail Sessions are being released as part of the digital deluxe version of American Shuffle

Over and Back Again - Digital Single

Over and Back Again, a song by Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank on Spotify

APPLE MUSIC  /  SPOTIFY  /  BANDCAMP

Consider It Correspondence and Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank have released “Over and Back Again” as a digital single. “Over and Back Again” was originally released  as part of the Hobo Nephews 2015 album American Shuffle.

This simple, yet meaningful, ballad about the cyclical nature of life was almost lost in the pages of Ian Alexy’s notebook. “At first it was just a chorus without the rest of the song,” Ian Alexy said. “So I moved on to write other songs. Then months later, flipping through the pages, I found the chorus and wrote the rest of the song in a flash.”
